A blog for the enterprise open source community
Gifts from Sun
Raven Zachary, May 16, 2006 @ 11:34 pm ETJavaOne kicked off today with a keynote by newly-appointed Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz. So, what did Sun gift to the open source community today?
In terms of software contributions to open source, add the following to the growing list of Sun’s open source software assets: Web Services Interoperability Technology (WSIT), Java Studio Creator, Java System Portlal Server, Business Process Execution Language (BPEL) Engine, the NetBeans Enterprise Pack, and the Java Message System (JMS) through the OpenJava MQ project (press release).
It made some new licensing announcements regarding Java on various platforms (press release).
The big conference news from Sun today seems to be the release of Java Platform Enterprise Edition 5 (J2EE 5 SDK) and a commitment to “open source” Java (news story). I wrote about this possibility in a blog entry last month, inspired by another blog entry from Matt Raible over at Virtuas.
Sun is hosting a “Toast to Open Source” event on Wednesday night, if you happen to be at the conference (press release). Wow – toast to open source. I don’t think open source needs any toast. Sun needs to be careful about how it uses the word toast, in general. I seem to recall a magazine cover last year with the headline “Sun is Toast!” showing a toaster with Scott and Jonathan inside, fairly charred (as pieces of toast, of course).
Seriously though, Sun is doing some good things with open source and their server prices are actually reasonable now. I’ve purchased a fair amount of Sun gear in my career, and have some vivid memories of budget bloodbath.
I suspect that Jonathan will have an update to his blog soon with a recap of these announcements.

JavaOne is completely nuts this year; queues around the block. It made me realize just how much is going on around Java. Practically every company I cover is there with bells on. I’ve written about the language since it first appeared eleven years ago, and you have to hand it to Sun; in spite of all the missteps over licensing and monetization, Java really has taken over the world.
Java it is good , but many time it gives me some problems on the browser that stucks my computer.

Here’s a brief intro: Irritable bowel syndrome or IBS is a painful, often distressing condition that affects an increasing number of people in the West. There may be a solution to the symptoms. The most common cause of IBS according to many experts is a build up of old fecal matter in the gut , and the resulting gas and bacteria it produces in the colon. The bacteria multiply and then spread toxins throughout the body. http://www.squidoo.com/natural-cleanse
