OSCON: Day 1 Recap

, July 25, 2006 @ 1:09 pm ET

I spent Monday at OSCON in two half-day tutorials: Business Partnering with Open Source Communities: Opportunities, Perils, and Pitfalls by James Howison. James shared some fascinating research on open source communities, including data mining results of SourceForge projects. One of the most interesting pieces of information from the talk was a graph on the number [...]

Ohloh – offering analysis of open source projects

, July 17, 2006 @ 11:55 am ET

A new site www.ohloh.net popped up on people’s radars today and was promptly Slashdotted to death, although it is now recovering. It’s avowed intent is to act as a single point of intelligence on open source projects, enabling developers and users find the projects that meet their criteria. That may sound rather like Freshmeat, or [...]

ITP Technology published an article over the weekend, “Larry sets sights on Red Hat’s customers“, speculating that Oracle intends to provide its own operating system support services for Red Hat Linux. Open Source security patches

, July 7, 2006 @ 7:50 am ET

Interesting thread on The Daily Dave pen-testing mailing list: Dave asked if anyone had a list comparing the patch speeds of different Linux distributions, such as, who patched OpenOffice bugs first…And who patched them last. And when will Ubuntu include grsec? One of the list members shot back a post calling our attention to The [...]
