, March 9, 2007 @ 4:42 pm ET

In early February, I posted a blog entry – “Qlusters loses its open source leader,” about the departure of Qlusters CTO William Hurley (“whurley”). My colleague, Rachel Chalmers and I just attended EclipseCon in Santa Clara, CA. I [...]

Contributing to open source projects on company time

, March 7, 2007 @ 10:13 am ET

Nearly twenty years after Richard Stallman wrote the first draft of the GNU General Public License, open source has really started to come of age in the enterprise. Industries which do the largest amount of custom development, notably financial services and healthcare, have either adopted open source software stacks outright or have used them as [...]

dbaDirect tries ‘indirect’ support and services for open source

, March 6, 2007 @ 3:58 pm ET

Infrastructure management company dbaDirect, in a move similar to Oracle’s play to intercept Red Hat’s enterprise support for its own distribution of Linux, is now supporting the MySQL open source database with dbaDirect’s usual enterprise services that include on-demand technical expertise, patches and upgrades. While Oracle’s Unbreakable Linux announcement last year was no surprise and [...]

, March 1, 2007 @ 11:36 pm ET

Over the last five years or so, there have been a number of rumors, stories and announcements on pre-loaded desktop Linux from big PC makers that typically get Linux fans excited, then disappointed.
