IONA acquires LogicBlaze
Raven Zachary, April 10, 2007 @ 7:35 am ETIONA Technologies announced today that it has acquired LogicBlaze, an open source business integration software company (press release). The deal terms have not been publicly disclosed, although it is an all-cash acquisition. LogicBlaze CEO Winston Damarillo sold GlueCode Software to IBM in May 2005, making this his second open source startup sale, and in a similar fashion, this deal seems to be primarily related to talent acquisition, as LogicBlaze only had 25 customer agreements in place.
This acquisition strengthens IONA overall expertise and involvement with the Apache ActiveMQ and Apache ServiceMix projects, which were the main open source components within LogicBlaze’s FUSE product. IONA will be bringing nine LogicBlaze employees on-board, including the co-founders Hiram Chirino, Rob Davies and James Strachan. IONA was already incorporating ActiveMQ and ServiceMix into its Celtix Open Source ESB product.
LogicBlaze and its sister company, Mergere, were both launched as part of Damarillo’s Simula Labs ‘holding company’, a sort of open source incubator, based in the Los Angeles area. In recent months, Simula Labs has refined its model to focus on an open source commercialization marketplace called the CoRE Network, beyond in-house efforts and including both external open source projects and vendor partnerships.
