Developers targeting more Linux, less Windows

While Windows continues to command the most developer use, an increasing number of developers are looking to Linux and other open source software such as Ruby and open standards such as JavaScript for the future. This shows continued momentum for the OS and the movement. Developers are the ones who usually drive innovation, and their OS choices have dramatic impact on the OS, application, support and overall markets. Evans reports developers targeting Windows have been declining for two years, and while still a solid majority at 64.8%, the trend of less Windows and more developers targeting Linux, which was at 11.8% and climbing, continues. In fact, it seems to be happening faster, meaning we have not yet seen the peak of this migration. With more Linux and open source software maturation, adoption and perhaps most importantly integration, there will be plenty of fuel for this engine of software change.

JavaScript is considered open source? That seems kinda strange.
It also seems to be strange to mix operating systems and languages as part of the analysis. After all, one can use JavaScript and Ruby on Windows.
Good point on JavaScript Swashbuckler, it’s more open standards, so i made a change to the post. In terms of the survey focus on OSs and languages, i think they’re just looking at high level trends, which seem to point to a more open future, even if it’s on top of Windows. thanks.
