Google sponsors Photoshop on Linux
Matthew Aslett, February 18, 2008 @ 12:49 pm ETIt is interesting to see Google confirming that it has hired Codeweavers, to ensure that Photoshop Creative Suite and Creative Suite 2 run on Linux via Wine.
As the post states “Photoshop is one of those applications that desktop Linux users are constantly clamoring for” and projects like this will go a long way to (eventually) increasing adoption of Linux on the desktop.
Of course, it’s not an entirely philanthropic move. Google uses Wine to support the Linux implementation of Picasa, so no doubt CS on Linux potentially helps drive Picasa on Linux and vice versa. All the same, it’s good to see Google stepping up to the plate.

Perhaps the biggest news is that we hired Codeweavers to make Photoshop CS and CS2 work better under Wine. Photoshop is one of those applications that Desktop linux users are constantly clamoring for, and we’re happy to say they work pretty well now. Perhaps not coincidentally, apps like Flash 8 are now starting to work in Wine, too. We look forward to further improvements in this area. [...]
