And this commenter makes the mistaken assumption that the original commenter doesn't read financial statements. In fact, the original commenter used to read them for a living . not that this has any relevance at all to the argument.

The marginal distribution cost of digital content is negligible. This is fact, not an opinion.

An Excellent article. One of the main positives to come out with the Open-Source solutions is that there is no risk of getting locked to a vendor-specific infrastructure. Open source has been able to evolve and capture the attention of the various business verticals because of the fact that it is different from the traditional proprietary approach. It has added another dimension to the traditional 5-level model of on-demand solutions, by introducing itself as the sixth level with the capability to share applications on a platform. Also another factor that has aided in the growth of Open Source business solutions is the speed with the application has evolved due to the community development that has formed the user base for the Open source developer community.

The commenter makes a major mistaken assumption. That being the marginal distribution cost is "negligible". This person does not read financial statements which is something you should do before making cost comments. Indeed, the major expense in running a software company, proprietary and open source, is the distribution costs. Development is the lowest.

Excellent article.

The beauty of software, indeed any digital content,is its negligible marginal distribution cost.

The closed source business model makes full use of this effect, whereas as the open source one does not. This makes the latter significantly less capital efficient, and therefore less attractive to potential developers.

On the other hand, the open source development model is significantly more efficient than the closed source one. Information and concepts are shared, meaning the same problem needs only be solved once, leaving developers free to add genuine value.

Clearly, the Holy Grail is to combine the closed source revenue model with the open source development model.

We're working on the P-BOS system, which aims to do just that.
