Open source bolsters big brands big time
Jay Lyman, September 21, 2009 @ 2:02 pm ETI recently read an interesting Associated Press article regarding the top brands based on their dollar value. The article was about an overall loss of brand luster, but heh, these brands are still worth $1.15 trillion together. What was one thing that at least eight of these brands and their backing organizations have in common? The answer is Linux and open source software. Looking at the top 10 of Coca-Cola, IBM, Microsoft, GE, Nokia, McDonald’s, Google, Toyota, Intel and Disney, it’s easy to see a good half of the list consists of companies fairly well entrenched in open source software (IBM, Microsoft, Nokia, Google and Intel). In addition, I recall briefings and slides from vendors who have cited some of the others as among their customers, including GE, Toyota and Disney.
So maybe all of you Big Mac and Coke fans out there can tell me how these other two are using Linux and open source software significantly. Regardless, I think it’s clear that open source software is helping the largest companies and brands in the world maintain their place atop the mind and market.

While we don’t work with all of the large brands mentioned here (we do with the majority of them), we hear from customers all the time about how open source is dramatically changing the way they develop software. With the cost cutting measures the big brands are looking to make due to the economy, it makes perfect sense that Coca Cola et al are looking for efficiencies. In fact, we here at Black Duck have been touting this message for quite some time — why should companies create everything from scratch when there are open source components already available? Many companies are looking to write less code and cut costs while increasing innovation. That may seem paradoxical but the best technology companies are doing it today.
