Free 451 Group report on regional differences in attitudes to open source adoption

, April 22, 2010 @ 11:25 am ET

Given The 451 Group’s presence in the UK, the CAOS (Commercial Adoption of Open Source) service is often asked to compare differing attitudes to open source adoption in Europe and North America. The recent survey of 1,700 open source software users, conducted as part of our recent CAOS report Climate Change: User Perspectives on the [...]

Sales and marketing for open source – same difference

, April 1, 2010 @ 6:32 am ET

Pentaho’s CTO James Dixon has been defending the open core licensing model against criticism from myself and Gartner’s Brian Prentice. Specifically, James states: “Matt Aslett (451) and Brian Prentice (Gartner) talk about code contributions and R&D practices but rarely mention S&M”. He goes on to explain how he sees fundamental differences between the sales and [...]

A guide to The 451 Group’s open source software coverage

, January 13, 2010 @ 7:23 am ET

Regular visitors to the 451 CAOS Theory blog will be well aware of The 451 Group’s CAOS (Commercial Adoption of Open Source) research service and our CAOS long-form reports.

They are probably less aware of the open source coverage that The 451 Group provides on a day-to-day and week-to-week basis, however, and I thought it would be worthwhile to provide some examples of The 451 Group’s ongoing open source coverage by highlighting a few recent reports.

The case against the case against Oracle-MySQL

, December 10, 2009 @ 12:37 pm ET

Matt Asay is right, in my opinion, to point out the inherent bias in the case Monty Widenius et al have made against Oracle’s potential ownership of MySQL. I would go further, however, in stating that the case being made against Oracle is flawed by the fact that it is so self-serving. For instance: I [...]

Wednesday saw the launch of The 451 Group’s CAOS Open Source Adoption survey, covering end user attitudes to the potential financial benefits of open source. Given current economic conditions there is considerable interest in open source software with many people wondering whether open source licensing can help users lower the cost of enterprise computing compared [...]

I just published a post about opportunities for cloud-based databases and data warehousing over on our Too Much Information blog, which I thought might be of interest to CAOS Theory readers given the involvement of Greenplum.

Playing fantasy M&A with the Benchmark/Accel open source investment portfolio

, May 5, 2009 @ 9:16 am ET

Javier Soltero, former CEO of Hyperic, has maintained that the sale of Hyperic to SpringSource was driven by discussion between himself and SpringSource CEO, Rod Johnson, but the fact that the companies shared investors – Accel Partners and Benchmark Capital – no doubt accelerated the deal (and I wonder whether either could have afforded to [...]

1,000 posts later… a reminder of CAOS Theory’s raison d’être

, March 9, 2009 @ 7:32 am ET

This is the one thousandth post to have been published on the 451 CAOS Theory blog, three years and six days since Raven wrote the first post, describing the blog’s raison d’être. It’s interesting to look back at Raven’s first post as a reminder as to why the CAOS Theory blog was launched and how [...]

Next week I’ll be jetting over to Lyon to attend ICT 2008, the European Commission Information Society’s research event for information and communication technologies. It promises to be a fascinating and lively event and will examine topics such as European Union priorities in ICT research for over €2 billion of funding available in 2009-2010, the [...]

Open source is not a business model

, October 13, 2008 @ 6:14 am ET

(Or “freedom of speech won’t feed my children”) Last month I noted that Matt Asay, one of the highest profile proponents of open source software, had changed his position on the use of proprietary extensions as a means of attracting paying customers to software based on open source code. Having previously advocated a 100% open [...]

, May 14, 2008 @ 4:46 pm ET

The 451 Group’s Commercial Adoption of Open Source (CAOS) Research Service now has a podcast (iTunes or RSS feed). A month or so ago, I was having a conversation with The 451 Group’s Vice President of Research Services, Simon Carruthers, about ways to expand the offerings of the CAOS Research Service. The CAOS Research Service [...]

Open source database adoption: widespread but shallow

, March 26, 2008 @ 10:30 am ET

Today sees the release of our latest CAOS report, Turning the Tables? – The impact of open source on the enterprise database market, which examines – as the subtitle suggests, how much of an impact the open source database projects and vendors have made on the traditional relational database market. One of the key findings [...]

Matthew Aslett and I are in San Francisco for the next few days at the Open Source Business Conference (OSBC). We will be moderating a total of three panels this year. Matthew’s panel on the the state of the open source database market is especially interesting, given that we are days away from publishing a [...]

Open source ERP: the next big thing?

, December 18, 2007 @ 10:09 am ET

2008 could be a very good year for the likes of Compiere and Openbravo if 451 CAOS Theory’s blog stats for this year are anything to go by. I’ve just been taking a look at the most read stories of the year, and following the usual suspects (Oracle Unbreakable Linux, the Linux desktop, the EC’s [...]
